A family familiar with the restaurant and bar business in Topeka will open the Lazy Toad Restaurant, Sports Bar and Lounge in the Fairlawn Plaza Mall on Monday.
WHAT: Lazy Toad Restaurant, Sports Bar and Lounge
WHERE: Fairlawn Plaza Mall, 5331 S.W. 22nd Place
WHEN: The west side restaurant & sports bar will open Monday, April 25
Todd Howell, who operated Bullfrogs Live at 4115 S.W. Huntoon for nine years as an owner/manager, is trying to bring a new concept to Topeka and are looking to draw a mature crowd to the Lazy Toad.
Partners in the venture are Howell, his father, Byron H. Howell, his mother, Joan Howell, and his wife Jennifer Howell.
The family members also were partners in Bullfrogs Live until they sold their interest in the business in September. They signed a lease with Fairlawn Plaza on Dec. 8, Howell said, and have been very ambitious and busy in preparing for Monday's opening.
Occupying about 10,000 square feet on the west end of the mall, the Lazy Toad will have rooms that offer different environments for customers. Capacity now is 289 but that will increase by 60 when a planned lounge is opened, Howell said. The lounge will be a place where customers can get away from noise and other distractions and have a conversation.
An outside patio of 2,000 square feet also will be added sometime after the opening, Howell said.
The restaurant will offer some bar standards and New York style pizza but will specialize in home style cooking, he said. The menu will include favorites such as fried chicken and meatloaf.
"We're looking to do something a little more upscale than your typical sports bar food," Howell explained while working on the last minute details before Monday's opening. "There isn't anything like this place in Topeka."
A large side room with a stage will provide space for live music on Fridays and Saturdays, according to Todd Howell.
Currently the Lazy Toad is interviewing for bartenders, waitresses and kitchen help and they expect to employee up to 60 people.
