A local rapper has written a song and released a music video in support of the Think Big Topeka campaign to draw Google’s fiber experiment to Top City.

Phillip Watson, who performs under the moniker Brail, posted the video “Google Me (Brail) Google, Kansas” early Friday morning on YouTube. Early this afternoon, the video had already drawn more than 200 views and was being circulated by Think Big participants and the performer’s followers on Twitter.

“I’m a big fan of the city,” Watson said. “It disturbs me that a lot of my peers don’t appreciate the city or realize how great it is. So many of them speak negatively about it, so I do whatever I can to boost the community.”

Watson is a Topeka native and a sophomore at Washburn University, where he is dual majoring in vocal music and cello performance. He has been rapping for six years and is signed to local label Soultaker Records. Outside of his musical pursuits, he is a member of the city’s Heartland Visioning task force.

He wrote the music and lyrics to “Google Me” about a week ago, after seeing a television special about the Think Big Topeka campaign. Watson said his friend Kim Schultz, owner of The Break Room, 911 S. Kansas Ave., had been urging him to write a song about Google for weeks, and inspiration finally struck on a lazy Friday morning.

“The lyrics are based on my own experience in the city and all of the things it has to offer,” Watson said. “And the chorus - ‘Google me’ is just such a cool phrase. It sounds like something people would say.”

Watson’s video contains footage from a Think Big Topeka video, as well as images associated with the city, Google and the state of Kansas. When asked what he hoped to accomplish with the song, Watson said he wanted to draw attention to local efforts to better the city, and would consider writing more music in the future to support other Think Big initiatives.

“I want to be the voice of the movement,” he said. “This is my way to help – I’ll push anything that they want to do. Anywhere they go, I want to follow.”
